Screen Shot 2011-09-01 at 6.03.47 PMCutting down paper is one of the first steps in moving to the cloud. Paper is expensive and hard to manage. The guys over at Gigaom have published a short article on 8 iOS (iPhone & iPad) apps that can help a business get rid of their paper. Here is the link to the orginial article: http://goo.gl/B2WcG

In particular, I highly reccomend Penultimate. I've used the app for about a year and I've found it helpful for taking notes or jotting down my thoughts. It's the perfect notebook app for the iPad. Tons of great features such as multipage notebooks, different color pens, and different types of paper. There is something for everybody. Check out their site: http://goo.gl/MqwqG

Motherboard.tv is reporting that Google is delivering high-speed fiber internet access to the Palo Alto area. The service will be free to faculty and students. Users can expect speeds upwards of 75mbs. Google isn't waiting for the telco companies to improve the Nation's Internet access... they are building their own independent data network. Thus far they have connected a few blessed Silcon Valley communities as well as Kanas City, Kanas. The video below describes the advantages of high speed fibre.

cloud questionMoving to the cloud has many benefits for a firm. It is one of the easiest ways to becoming more productive while saving money. Some of the major benefits are outlined below.

Cost Savings

  • Working in the cloud will help firms better control costs. Cloud technology allows existing production staff to be far more efficient.

  • Not as many support personnel will be needed and due to the synergy of the technology remaining support staff can service multiple locations.

  • Fixed & Utility Based Pricing will allow a firm to purchase only what they need and only when they need it. Additionally, a firm doesn't need to worry about a sudden increase in rates.

Accessibility

  • Information is available anywhere... if you want to prepare a financial statement while looking at the Eiffel Tower... you can.

  • If you want to see if an e-filed tax return was accepted before the parade at Carnival... you can.

  • Your work schedule can fit your life schedule.

  • Virtual Private Network between your data center and branch office. Allows both facilities to act if they are in the same building. Completely secure endpoint to endpoint.

  • Secure Shell Access (SSH) fully encrypts data endpoint to endpoint. Primarily used with Linux machines.

  • Security Socket Layer (SSL/TLS) encrypts data in transit and can be used in conjunction with Remote Desktop.
